Our Youth Personality Peek of the week, Jimmy Nkaiwuatei, a Kenyan who is a pioneering public health advocate and dedicated scientific leader. He is the Founding Partner and Scientific Director at Zihi Institute (formerly Students Against Superbugs Africa) in Kenya, where he directs strategic research initiatives and capacity-building programs focused on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and infectious diseases across Africa. Jimmy’s expertise lies in shaping and advancing the organization’s scientific agenda, with a goal to address some of the continent’s most urgent health challenges.
At Zihi Institute, Jimmy provides visionary leadership to develop innovative research themes, oversee capacity development programs, and ensure effective dissemination of scientific findings to influence policy making. His work bridges multiple sectors to foster global health collaborations that amplify impact in Africa and beyond. His strategic focus on AMR has led to the successful implementation of several continent-wide programs aimed at building local AMR capacity.
Jimmy’s commitment has led him to establish and implement pivotal AMR initiatives, including the 2021-2022 Antimicrobials and Antimicrobial Resistance Training program, which empowered over 200 early-career researchers across Africa. His role has been instrumental in developing emerging AMR research leaders through his guidance and innovative program design.
Ongoing Activities:
Currently, Jimmy has assisted the implementation of some of the AMR stewardship initiatives within the AMR Ambassadors Program, including the two remaining projects in Kenya and Tanzania, focusing on empowering young people against AMR. These initiatives aim to develop local AMR advocates, foster cross-country collaborations, and strengthen grassroots-level awareness and stewardship activities.
