Meet our Youth Personality Peek of the Week – Dr. Mayowa S. Akinpelu

Background:

Our Youth Personality Peek of the week Dr. Mayowa S. Akinpelu, is a Nigerian medical doctor and a passionate advocate for health emergency preparedness and response. He currently serves as the Executive Chairman of the Africa Public Health Students Network (AfricaPHSN) and is a leading figure in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) as the Chairperson of the African Youth AMR Alliance Task Force.

As a dedicated global health advocate, Dr. Mayowa has been actively involved in numerous youth-led initiatives across Africa, championing health system strengthening efforts. His expertise has earned him a position on the World Health Organization (WHO) Youth Council. In addition, he plays a key role on the Mpox Community Protection Partners Coordinating Team, working alongside WHO, IFRC, and UNICEF. He is also a member of the Generation Unlimited 9ja Taskforce, which aims to equip 20 million Nigerian youth with essential skills and opportunities by 2030. 

Dr. Mayowa’s work aligns with the “Africa We Want” vision, promoting the Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by leading youth-responsive health initiatives across the continent.

Ongoing Activities:

Currently, Dr. Mayowa is focused on addressing the intersection of climate change and health in Africa. Through his collaboration with UNICEF, he is developing innovative strategies to create climate-resilient health systems that can withstand environmental challenges. His work continues to empower youth, inspire global health advocacy, and drive tangible solutions to the continent’s most pressing health issues.

Major Achievements in Public Health/AMR:

Dr. Mayowa was instrumental in founding the African Youth AMR Alliance Task Force, a coalition of youth-led organizations representing over 600,000 African youth working to combat AMR. His leadership in drafting the African Youth Position Statement on AMR has amplified African perspectives at the international level, including at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He was among the few youth delegates to attend the UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR, further solidifying his role as a global advocate for public health and AMR mitigation.

Through his work, Dr. Mayowa  continues to make a lasting impact on the health landscape of Africa, driving forward innovative solutions to create a healthier and more resilient continent.
